Psalm 34:17-20 (King James Version):
17The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
18The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
19Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. 20He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
Psalm 34:17-20 (The Message Version):
17 Is anyone crying for help? God is listening,
ready to rescue you.
18 If your heart is broken, you'll find God right there;
if you're kicked in the gut, he'll help you catch your breath.
19 Disciples so often get into trouble;
still, God is there every time.
20 He's your bodyguard, shielding every bone;
not even a finger gets broken.
Word in Action:
Trust that the Lord is with you when you are going through rough times. He's not just passively there with you either. He is there actively watching the situation, allowing just enough trials and tribulations to come your way in order to make you strong. As soon as you reach that point, He delivers you!
It is common to think that because we are Christians, we automatically get to live the "good life." In so many ways, that common thought is true. Jesus said that he came that we may have an abundant life. But He also promised that things will NOT be easy. He urges us to count the cost before we decide to be His follower. Why is that? It's because He knows that as soon as we declare that we will follow Him, the enemy and the enemy's evil followers will set plans in motion to attack us. While God's promise that no weapon formed against us will prosper (i.e. be successful), we have to remember that as believers in Christ, many weapons will form against us in attempt to keep us from conforming to the image of Christ. Psalm 34:19 says that MANY are the afflictions of the righteous. What's great about that scripture is that in the very same verse, we are promised that the Lord will deliver us from all of those same afflictions.
A broken heart is one of the only ailments that cannot be healed with "traditional medicine." Try going to your doctor and asking him/her to prescribe a medication to cure it. Impossible. None exists. So when you are suffering from a broken heart, call on Jesus for His healing power. When you see someone else suffering from a broken heart, again, call on Jesus for help. But also remember your role as a Christian…a little representation of Christ on earth. In Psalm 34:18, Jesus promises that He is near to those who have a broken heart. We are to do the same. By no means am I saying that we must be ever-present with the broken-hearted – our human limitations likely prevent that from being possible. However through prayer, encouraging words, occasional visits, phone calls, etc., we can let the broken-hearted know that we are with them.
